If you’ve been exploring different weight loss methods, chances are you’ve come across fasting particularly intermittent fasting (IF) as a popular approach. But does it actually work? And is it the right strategy for you?

What Is Intermittent Fasting?
Intermittent fasting isn’t a diet, it’s a timing strategy. Instead of focusing on what you eat, it focuses on when you eat. Common fasting methods include:
- 16:8 — fast for 16 hours, eat within an 8-hour window
- 5:2 — eat normally 5 days, restrict calories for 2 days
- Alternate Day Fasting — fast every other day (more extreme)
The idea is to reduce overall calorie intake and help your body become more efficient at using fat for energy.
Can Fasting Help With Weight Loss?
In many cases, yes — fasting can support weight loss, mainly because:
- You eat fewer meals (and usually fewer calories)
- Insulin levels drop, which may support fat-burning
- It encourages more mindful eating during eating windows
However, fasting is not magic. A calorie deficit is still required. If you overeat during your eating window, results will be limited.
Is It Right for You?

- You tend to snack late at night
- You don’t feel hungry in the morning
🚫 Might not work if:
- You have blood sugar issues or are prone to energy dips
- You’re training early in the day and need fuel
- You find it encourages bingeing or poor habits

When I work with clients on weight loss whether in 1-to-1 sessions or through my online coaching, I rarely prescribe fasting unless it suits their natural rhythm. It’s one tool in the toolbox, but not essential.
The key is choosing a method that fits your life, your schedule, and your energy levels and supports a sustainable calorie deficit.
